Discovery Place Science
The North Carolina Science Festival is a multi-day celebration showcasing science and technology all around the state. With over 400 public events and 200 school events planned across the state, Discovery Place Science is connecting you with some of the local events happening in Uptown Charlotte.
Check out some of the exciting events Discovery Place Science has planned for the 2018 NC Science Festival. All activities are included with Museum admission unless otherwise noted:
- Weekend of Robotics: Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 8
Stop by the Explore More Stuff lab as we host a weekend packed full of robotics fun. Guests will learn about Leonardo da Vinci's robot designs and how they stack up to modern robotic technology.
- Micropipette Art: Saturday, April 14
Using a special tool called a micropipette, stop by the Explore More Me lab to create a colorful canvas with Kelvin, the NC Science Festival spokesbot. Learn about micropipettes and what types of medical and science careers utilize these tools.
- Day of Dissection: Sunday, April 15, 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Ever wonder how different animals look on the inside? Watch as one of our lab instructors walk you through different dissections so we can learn from taking an inside look at anatomy. Dissections will take place in Explore More Life every hour on the half hour beginning at 12:30 p.m. (12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.).
- Science on the Rocks: Nerd Olympics – Friday, April 20, 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. (21+ event)
Join in this adults-only party and let your nerd flag fly! Get hands-on with science experiments, play with 3D-printed toys and compete in brain games and trivia to tap into your inner nerd. From pocket protectors to bow ties and high waters, come dressed to impressed to this celebration. The crowd favorite will win our Nerdy Costume Contest. Must be 21+ to enter. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
- Day in the Life Series – Lab Sciences: Saturday, April 21, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Have you ever wanted to work in a medical lab? Meet some local phlebotomists, medical professionals who are trained to draw blood from a patient, and discover what their day-to-day job looks like. The Day in the Life series is a part of the Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas Health Care) series on occupations in the medical field.
- Statewide Star Party: Saturday, April 21, 7:30 – 10:30 p.m.
Enjoy a night under the stars in Charlotte. Explore stargazing, celestial viewing and astronomy activities on top of the parking deck of Discovery Place Science, and participate in this statewide stargazing party. This event is FREE and weather permitting.
- Food Chemistry: Sunday, April 22, 12:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Experiment with different types of foods and see why and how our bodies burn calories. Demonstrations will take place every hour on the half hour in Explore More Me (12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, 4:30 p.m.)
- Astronomical Adventures: Saturday, April 28, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Have an astronomical adventure at Discovery Place Science as we explore the cosmos with hands-on activities and events throughout the Museum. Guests can travel among the stars inside our inflatable planetarium as we identify constellations, planets and other celestial objects. “The Night Sky” inflatable planetarium shows are about 20 minutes and will take place at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. at The Stage.
- Science & Superheroes Award Ceremony: Sunday, April 29, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Did you know that many comic book superheroes powers derive from STEM topics? In partnership with Spandex City Comics, students from all over the Carolinas were invited to create their own STEM superhero characters to solve real-world problems. Winning entries will be awarded at a super special ceremony at Discovery Place Science. Be sure to wear your cape or Spandex supersuit for the occasion.
