Education Studio selected as first Making Sense of SCIENCE partner on East Coast

Discovery Place Science

Discovery Place Education Studio was recently selected as the East Coast's first host site for WestEd Making Sense of SCIENCE (MSS) professional development courses.

Starting in June, the Education Studio will offer expanded professional development offerings for K-8 science teachers through its affiliate partnership with WestEd, a national education research and development nonprofit.

"This partnership between WestEd and Discovery Place is a fantastic match. Both organizations are passionate about science and committed to supporting teachers in professional learning. Discovery Place Education Studio staff are top notch and I can't imagine a better place to experience the fun of science while exploring the art of teaching," said Kirsten Daehler, director of the WestEd Making Sense of SCIENCE project.

MSS offers a comprehensive series of professional development courses for teachers that focus on core topics of K-8 earth, life and physical science. Each course explores the intersection of science knowledge, teaching and literacy so that teachers are better able to support students in making sense of essential science content.

Evidence from a series of randomized controlled studies have shown that the MSS approach to professional development strengthens teachers' content knowledge, transforms classroom practices, and boosts student achievement — especially for low-achieving students, English learners, and students with poor literacy skills. The materials were developed at WestEd and published in collaboration with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA).

"Educators throughout the southeast region can now use Discovery Place Education Studio as their local training destination for WestEd Making Sense of SCIENCE teacher institutes and facilitation academies. As an affiliate site, we can reach a much broader community and continue our mission of providing educators with ongoing inspiration, support and collaboration," said Discovery Place Education Studio Director Stephanie Hathaway.

All Discovery Place Education Studio program managers will be certified WestEd course facilitators this summer.

The first Discovery Place Education Studio facilitation academy for Making Sense of SCIENCE runs June 2-6 on the topic of energy. The WestEd Force & Motion Teacher Workshop runs June 23-27. Registration is now open to educators.
