Steampunk: A blast from the future
Discovery Place Science
A common question when it comes to Science on the Rocks: Steampunk Soiree is “What do I wear?”
The easy answer? Anything! Steampunk is about a rebellious era that promotes creativity, innovation and imagination, just like our Museum.
If you are unfamiliar with the term Steampunk, you’re not the only one. Steampunk has grown in popularity over the years, but we still get the question about what it actually is.
Steampunk generally stemmed from a literary genre depicting historical events of the 19th century that incorporated science fiction and fantasy. “Steam” comes from the steam-powered machines and “punk” is derived from the deconstruction of, reimagining of or rebellion against parts of the century.
Over time, Steampunk has broken the barrier of just being known as a literary genre to include movies (Sherlock Holmes), TV shows (Warehouse 13), games, music and performance art.
Part of the fun is being able to create a costume and look that is inspired by the make-believe era and enhanced with your own style. Because the Victorians were the first people to fully capitalize upon steam technology, most of Steampunk fashion has a Victorian flair.
