The Discovery Place Girls in STEM program connects girls and young women to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to inspire a life-long interest in fields where women have been historically underrepresented.
The *Girls in STEM Maker Series ignites a passion for the exciting world of STEM topics such as space, chemistry, engineering, digital fabrication and circuitry. Students will participate in age-appropriate maker activities, use creative thinking to solve real-world challenges, and experience STEM in a collaborative environment. Each week we will also highlight pioneering women.
Week 1 - Engineering: Students will be challenged to engineer a solution to a real-world scenario.
Week 2 - Circuitry & Design: Students will learn the basics of circuitry and how it can be used to create unique, wearable art.
Week 3 - Space: Students will learn about basic rocket propulsion using balloons, as well as learning about constellations found in our night sky.
Week 4 - Programming: Students will learn the basics of programming, including navigating challenges using a robot.
Week 5 - Digital Fabrication: Students will learn about digital fabrication and get hands-on experience with 3D Pens.
Week 6 - Chemistry: Students will visually learn about acids and bases using colors and the pH scale.
Lastly, we will conclude with The End of Series Celebration on February 25, from 1 p.m. — 2 p.m.
*There are no refunds for missed sessions.
